Pedro Reportedly to the Mets

I was going to launch into an article detailing how Pedro is not worth the 4 years 50 million he is reportedly getting. Right before I was about to start, I read Jayson's Stark article on Pedro. He is an awesome writer and sums everything up perfectly. Here is a quote from the article:

"But everything that comes after this will be filed under Life Without Pedro. He made their world more interesting every moment he was around. But he might very well have made their life a lot more peaceful just by deciding he had hung around long enough."

I agree.

Matt Clement anyone?????

I just realized that Clement is 30 years old already. For some reason I thought he was a few years younger than that. Im sure Clement can improve on his lifetime losing record, as I know he receieved poor run support/bullpen work last year, even after a torrid start. I do remember hearing that he might have a hard time dealing in a big baseball town like NY or Beantown though, because its been said he is a private person who needs consistancy and familiarity in his life. Kinda reminds me of somebody (Nomahhh), but we all know how he put up numbers here.

I bet your family is proud that during exams week your spending more time writing sports articles

Chris,

Very interesting comment. Your are right in that Clement might have already passed his prime since he is 30, and Bill James says that players hit their peak at about age 27. As far as Clement's record goes, his run support last year was 4.03. The top pitcher in the NL in run suppor was Ishii with 6.70. Eric Milton who had an ERA of a run higher than Clement had run support of 6.54. This is why Milton had 14 wins. Milton's ERA was 4.75 and Clement's was 3.68.

I am concerned that Clement might fall to the pressure that is in Boston as you pointed out. But right now, the Sox are without a fifth starter and I feel they have to take the risk and go up to 3 years 30 million max for Matt Clement. I don't want somebody like Astacio starting a fifth of the Sox games for us

I also found this article very interesting.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/gammons/story?id=1946349

I think Gammons makes some interesting points and gives a nice perspective.

Here's just a little quote from it.

"But the biggest problem is simply Martinez in New York, and for Cuza to ignore this is acting in the worst interest of his client. In Boston, Pedro was allowed to do whatever he wanted -- show up whenever and take vacations. The Boston media were easy on him for what he had done. They gave him a mulligan for not attending Game 6 in New York. He went months without talking to the media for what he considered slights. He reacted angrily to fans who booed him. By and large, he was given slack because for a seven-year stretch he was the best right-handed pitcher in the history of the franchise.

What players, agents and talk-show callers don't understand is that players are not paid on the past, but on the perceived future. Martinez's performance curve is declining. The idea is to eliminate as many inefficiencies as possible, and one of the major inefficiencies in the baseball business is sentiment. That is why Pedro was asked to take a paycut in Boston, albeit one on a contract that totaled $40.5 million.
In New York, there will be no pass, nor should there be one. This is completely a mercenary decision by Martinez, and he will have no room for complaints whatsoever if he is savaged by New Yorkers. Why not? Pedro Martinez went to the Mets solely because they offered him more money. Period. If he doesn't perform to the standard GM Omar Minaya has promised his owners, it won't be a pretty picture."

You were pretty upset about the finals comment huh?
I think the person was kidding.....I dk though b/c it wasn't me.

don't worry matt, we still love you and your crazy obsession with sports!

I thought I already posted a comment about the Gammons article but I dont see it, so I am going to rewrite what I said.

Gammons article explains everything perfectly. He basically writes down everything that has been in my mind about Pedro. Great ARTICLE!

As to the person who made the comment about finals, this is a sports blog, and I want to keep it that way. That's why I got a little upset.

All I have to say to Pedro is "adios." I wouldn't dare say that he's past his prime (we all know what happened last time we said that about a pitcher), but I just can't believe that Wells is going to be one of our 5 starting pitchers. He's 10-10 at Fenway, and used to be part of the evil empire. I wonder how many boos he's going to get, and for how long.

Matt Clement's control problems concern me a lot. I have seen him many a time throw 4 consecutive balls to batters. On the flip side he does have great stuff and still a lot of potential. He is probably the best pitcher out on the market currently. The red sox do need a #2 starter desperately.

Gabrielle,

I agree with your comments about Pedro. He is past his prime, and while he is still good, he is not worth the 4 year 54 million the mets are giving him.

In regards to Wells, I never thought i would see him in a boston uni. that being said, i think it is a good signing. he has made 30 or more starts 4 of the past 5 years. in those years his ERA has never risen above 4.47, and has been as low as 3.73. Especially with the way the deal is set up in that he has to earn a lot of the money through incentives, i like the deal a lot. plus he is gone in two years and guess who becomes a FA right at that time???

JOHAN SANTANA!!!!!!!!!!!!

In regards to Clement I think he would make a great #2 pitcher. It is true that he is the best SP out there available and therefore his price will be driven up b.c. so many teams are pursuing him. i think he signs either a 3 year 30 mil or 4 year 40 mil deal. if i was Theo, i would go up to 3 year 30 mil, with a team option for a fourth. no higher than that though.

in regards to his walks, he can be erratic at times, as he allows 3.8 walks per 9 innings according to the Harball Times. I think he makes up for those walks by striking out 9.45 batters per 9 innings. all in all, he is a risk, but i think he will be worth it.
